The major domestic water supply project in Portland had costs 2000
in excess of $1 million and was funded by the Inter-American
Development Bank and JSIF. Up to 2000, the Fund had already
completed 11 projects for the parish of Portland. The building and
rehabilitation of roads, schools, water systems. health centres,
children’s homes, and skills training centres, are a few of the
projects that JSIF had embarked on.
Fourteen projects were approved for the parish of Hanover, by JSIF
at a cost of $5 million, with 7 projects already completed.
The St. Thomas Parish Council received funds from JSIF for road
improvement and water supply, in the community of Hillside. St.
Thomas has benefited from 14 JSIF projects, amounting to $31
million. Five of these projects were completed.
JSIF urged the government and organizations in Jamaica to
invest in “social capital” in order to assist with the development of
roads, water, schools, and social
services in Jamaica. JSIF’s
investments in community
projects such as: roads, water,
schools, social services became
focal points to encourage
communities to come together,
plan together, work together,
forge productive relationships
with outside agencies and
thus achieve more together
for the benefit of community
development.
